Forecast for W. Europe 2018 sales cut on new emissions rules

Western European new-car sales fell 7.3 percent in October as the implementation of a tighter emissions regime continued to weigh on sales, according to data from LMC Automotive.

Registrations fell to 1.01 million cars last month from 1.094 million a year earlier, the consulting firm said, cutting its full-year sales forecasts for the region this year and next.

The new Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) became mandatory in Europe on Sept. 1, forcing automakers including Volkswagen Group and Renault to halt deliveries of some models that had yet to be re-certified.

“Although many models which had been temporarily unavailable due to backlogs in WLTP testing were back on sale in October, it appears that it will take more time for the volume of registrations to reflect this,” LMC analyst David Oakley said.

WLTP led to an August sales surge, as brands cleared non-compliant stocks by discounting and registering their own cars, later sold as used.

The seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of Western European sales rose to 12.6 million vehicles last month, up 12 percent from September, LMC said. Its numbers are based on national sales data and estimates for some smaller markets.

Lower forecast

The consulting group cut its sales forecast for the region to 14.41 million cars in 2018 – a 0.8 percent annual gain – from the previously expected 14.5 million, citing a weaker outlook in Italy among contributing factors. Registrations in 2019 are now seen at 14.54 million instead of 14.6 million.

The forecast cut reflects “prospects for economic growth now looking slightly weaker in some key markets,” LMC said.

Despite an extra selling day in many markets, October registrations fell 7.4 percent in Germany and Italy, 6.6 percent in Spain, 2.9 percent in Britain and 1.5 percent in France, according to data published in recent days.

DS Smith Tecnicarton estará presente en EMPACK2018, que se celebra en Madrid los días 12 y 13 de noviembre, para dar a conocer sus últimas innovaciones en embalaje industrial. La compañía se ubicará en el stand D28 donde podrán verse múltiples soluciones de embalaje, representativos de la variedad de diseños que puede desarrollar.

 

Destaca en esta ocasión la presencia de Tower Rack®, el lanzamiento más importante de 2018 y uno de sus últimos trabajos innovadores para el sector automoción. Se trata de un concepto que cubre simultáneamente las necesidades de varios ámbitos de la cadena de suministro: embalaje, almacenamiento y abastecimiento a línea.

 

Tower Rack® es una estructura metálica cuyos 4 metros de altura tratan de acercar a los operarios todas las piezas necesarias y optimizar el espacio en línea de montaje ya que evita estanterías fijas, palés… Asimismo, minimiza el espacio en almacén ya que esta torre portátil se desplaza por el entorno de la fábrica suministrando piezas. Puede moverse en la cadena de abastecimiento de manera manual, mediante trenes Lean o incluso en Vehículos de Guiado Autónomos (AGV), lo que permite una monitorización absoluta de su tránsito. Además, Tower Rack® incrementa productividad en línea ya que permite la disminución de unidades de suministro.

 

Uno de los aspectos más destacados de esta innovación es su sistema móvil de acondicionamiento interno. Un dispositivo manual o eléctrico permite desplazar verticalmente los celdilleros para facilitar el acceso, la ergonomía y seguridad a los operarios. Mejora la seguridad laboral ya que no se desplaza el operario en busca de piezas sino que es el propio sistema de almacenamiento quien acude a la línea de producción. La reducción de movimientos de tránsito por la planta productiva reduce la posibilidad de accidentes laborales.

 

También pensado para el sector de la automoción, DS Smith Tecnicarton presentará un embalaje metálico especialmente diseñado para el transporte de airbags. Además, mostrará el sistema Tecnipack® con acondicionamiento flexible y los embalajes para graneles, tanto sólidos como líquidos, Tecnitank y Octabin.

 

Asimismo se expondrán diferentes soluciones de embalaje de manutención como bandejas termoconformadas, bacs acondicionados con diferentes materiales o soluciones en espuma. Y se darán a conocer distintos desarrollos de la compañía en cartón con acondicionamiento multimaterial a medida.

Diesel: new data proves that modern diesel cars emit low pollutant emissions on the road

New data released today by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) provides evidence that latest-generation diesel cars emit low pollutant emissions on the road. This data was measured in real-driving conditions by the drivers of the various national type approval authorities.

Some 270 new types of diesel cars type-approved against the latest Euro 6d-TEMP standard were introduced on the European market over the past year. The new data shows that all of these diesel cars performed well below the NOx threshold of the real driving emissions (RDE) test, which applies to all new car types since September 2017. What is more, already today most of these vehicles show results that are below the stricter NOx threshold that will be mandatory from January 2020.

RDE measures key pollutants, such as NOx and particles, emitted by cars while driven on public roads over a wide range of conditions. RDE therefore ensures that pollutant emission levels measured during the laboratory test (WLTP) are confirmed on the road, and that the legal thresholds are not exceeded during day-to-day driving.

Each of these 270 RDE-compliant diesel vehicle types represents a whole ‘family’ of similar cars of differing variants, so a multitude of low-emitting diesel cars are now available on the market. The German automobile club, ADAC, estimates that there are more than 1,200 different RDE-compliant cars available today1. Moreover, their availability is increasing rapidly.

Erik Jonnaert, ACEA Secretary General, said: “These new findings prove that modern diesel cars, supported by fleet renewal policies and combined with alternative powertrains, will play a strong role in helping cities move towards compliance with air quality targets. In parallel, diesel vehicles will continue to remain important for reducing CO2 emissions in the short and medium term, even though all manufacturers are expanding their offer of electrically-chargeable cars.”

Jonnaert: “Auto makers have made major investments to quickly deliver these massive reductions in NOx emissions. It is important that we stop demonising diesel technology as a whole. Instead, we need to differentiate between the old diesel fleet and the latest generation of vehicles.”

These findings are supported by third parties. ADAC recently performed independent on-road testing of RDE-compliant diesel vehicles and found that modern diesels emit 85% less NOx on average than Euro 5 cars, concluding that the latest diesels are “very clean”2. Their additional testing demonstrated that the best-performing RDE-compliant Euro 6 diesels emit as much as 95-99% less NOx than Euro 5 vehicles.

German car market still feels October pinch from switch to WLTP

VDA adjusts expectations for domestic production and exports

In October the switch to the new test procedure WLTP (Worldwide Light Vehicle Test Procedure) continued to impact on the German passenger car market. It totaled 252,600 new registrations, which was 7 percent below last year’s level. October last year had two working days less. So far this year just over 2.9 million passenger cars have been newly registered in Germany – a rise of 1 percent.

October’s incoming orders from Germany were 8 percent down on last year’s level. Year-to-date domestic orders have lost 2 percent. Orders arriving from abroad showed a similar development, recording a fall of 13 percent in October, while foreign orders during the first ten months of 2018 narrowly failed to equal last year’s figure (-1 percent).

The distortions due to WLTP were also felt in passenger car production. A total of 442,500 units were built. This represents a 3 percent year-on-year increase, but it should be remembered that October had two more working days this year. Since January, around 4.4 million brand new passenger cars have rolled off the production lines (-7 percent). Exports showed a similar trend, with the German OEMs exporting 328,100 units (+1 percent) in October. In the first ten months of this year exports amounted to 3.4 million units, which was a decrease of 7 percent compared to 2017.

Given the developments in passenger car production in the wake of the switch to WLTP, the VDA expects domestic car production during 2018 as a whole to come to nearly 5.3 million units (-7 percent) and exports to reach 4.1 million units (-6 percent).

 

Jaguar Land Rover will open engineering office in Hungary

Jaguar Land Rover is aiming for closer collaboration with suppliers in central and eastern Europe with a new technical engineering office in Hungary.

The automaker officially launched its new 1.4 billion-euro ($1.6 billion) plant in Nitra, Slovakia, on Oct. 25 with an initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles.

JLR has warned that its UK factories may be hit if Britain leaves the EU without a trade deal, disrupting supply chains.

The automaker said engineers in Budapest will work with staff in Britain and elsewhere when the office opens in 2019, creating 100 jobs.

“The team in Budapest will complement the suppliers and supplier technical assistance that we already partner with in the region, as well as our teams in the UK,” said Nick Rogers, JLR’s product engineering chief.

The announcement was welcomed by Hungary’s foreign minister Peter Szijjarto. “The decision of the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer to open a technical engineering office in Budapest reaffirms our foreign direct investment strategy and in particular our specific focus on high quality automotive-related growth,” he said.

 

 

Fábrica de carroçarias e peças em carbono pode “nascer” em Évora

O projeto global prevê, entre 2019 e 2023, um investimento na unidade industrial de cinco milhões de euros e a criação de 53 postos de trabalho. O início da obra está previsto para o próximo ano.

A Câmara de Évora anunciou esta sexta-feira ter atribuído a classificação de projeto de Potencial Interesse Municipal (PIM) à construção de uma fábrica de carroçarias e peças em carbono para as indústrias automóvel, aeronáutica, naval e eólica.

O município indicou, em comunicado, que a classificação do projeto e a cedência de um lote de terreno à Pleasant Racing para a construção da fábrica, na zona industrial da cidade, foram aprovadas na mais recente reunião de câmara.

Contactado esta sexta-feira pela agência Lusa, o presidente da Câmara de Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, adiantou que entre os promotores do projeto está o piloto português de todo-o-terreno Ricardo Leal dos Santos. “Já temos um acordo para se poder instalar” a fábrica em Évora, disse, manifestando-se satisfeito por a Pleasant Racing ter escolhido a cidade alentejana para desenvolver o seu projeto.

O autarca referiu que, numa primeira fase, a empresa vai fazer um investimento “na ordem dos dois milhões de euros” e criar “dez postos de trabalho”. Mas, segundo o município, o projeto global prevê, entre 2019 e 2023, um investimento na unidade industrial de cinco milhões de euros e a criação de 53 postos de trabalho com nível escolar igual ou superior ao 12.º ano de escolaridade.

“Mais importante que o investimento e a criação de postos de trabalho é que estamos a falar de tecnologia de topo“, notou, assinalando que o projeto “dá perspetivas de futuro do ponto de vista da inovação e da ligação de Évora a projetos tecnológicos que são importantes”.

Questionado sobre os prazos, Pinto de Sá indicou que “é difícil” fazer uma previsão sobre o arranque da construção da fábrica, porque ainda “há que fazer o projeto”, mas admitiu que “no próximo ano já haverá obra”.
